About the event
Come & be guided on the fifth section of a unique and special new Pilgrimage route which runs through the beautiful Golden Valley area of Herefordshire. This new pilgrim’s path has so much history and natural beauty to discover, we will be spoilt as we wander together. ABBEYDORE DEANERY | GOLDEN VALLEY PILGRIM WAY
We are going to be breaking the route down into manageable sections as day walks over the next 6 months giving people chance to experience the route without having to walk it all in one go!
Just like the famous Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route, this Golden Valley path has a beautiful 'credential' (passport), which can be purchased for £5 and can be stamped at various churches along the way giving you satisfaction, and a memory of your walk, (the ticket price for these walks will also incude a donation to the churches that we get the stamps at of £2 per church).
This 8 mile section starts at Clodock hamlet, then gradually head up through fields and over stiles to Walterstone past the ancient church there, next to which there is the charming pub the 'Carpenter's arms' Then again we walk up past a wooded hill fort onto Walterstone common and down to a gem of a small church, which is only accessible on foot at Llancillo. This church also sits right next to an ancient motte, just amazing!
The history continues as we then walk up to Rowlestone where we get to see another church dripping with cravings and fascinating artifacts.
Finally we descend to our destination of the pretty village of Ewyas Harold, again with it's motte & bailey castle site. Here there are 2 pubs to take our reward of a well-earned pint perhaps?
(Nearer the time, arrangements will be organised to park some cars at the end point to enable transport back to the start to collect our vehicles)
The walk will be led by 'setting our intention' at the start, and there may be sections of reflective quiet walking to contemplate and relax in our natural surroundings. It is a 'non-religious' pilgrimage, but hopefully a spiritual one.
You are welcome to bring a walking staff as an indication of your pilgrim status, & you will receive a scallop shell to attach to your ruck sack, also as a sign you are walking the pilgrim way.
