Walk Details

Be expertly guided on a 7 mile circular walk starting on the beautiful banks of the river Wye at Bredwardine, Herefordshire, near the border of England & Wales. This route firstly takes us over a stunning red-brick bridge & we explore area on the other side that once had a castle & still has a gem of ancient church. This pretty church has many historic artifacts including some interesting stone carvings over the exterior of it's blocked north doorway, known as the 'Devil's door' by the famous diarist Kilvert who is buried here. Next its off to see the site of an ancient settlement along the river bank, and then we make our way gradually up through farm land using footpaths & quiet lanes to reach a ridge with stunning views of the Golden valley, the Wye valley & the Black mountains in the Brecon Beacons national park, and beyond! Just along the top here we find the main attraction Arthur's stone. Arthur's Stone, is a Neolithic chambered tomb, & is over 5,000 years old! Like many prehistoric monuments this tomb has been linked to King Arthur, according to legend, it was here that Arthur slew a giant who left the impression of his elbows on one of the stones as he fell! The stone was also the inspiration for the sacrificial altar of Aslan in C.S. Lewis' well-loved tale, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. The terrain is varied & hilly, but there are no mountains involved! Things will be taken at a steady pace with plenty of time for absorbing the views and taking photos! Assistance is given over stiles and anywhere where else when needed. Dogs are allowed but will need to be kept on a lead and under control, as there will probably be livestock around, and possibly ground-nesting birds. If you book over a lunch or teatime, feel free to bring some packed food and we can stop for a picnic! There is a lovely pub called 'The Red Lion' in Bredwardine village, and there is the beautiful Brobury House & gardens, either of which you may wish to visit as well.
