Walk Details

A professionally guided 6.5 mile countryside walk in an exceptionally beautiful part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. We climb up slowly through woodland & down the other the other side of a ridge to visit Llangorse lake, the largest natural lake in Wales. Like the mountain lakes, it lies in a hollow formed by glacial action, but at 154m above sea level, it’s far more accessible. There, we visit the nature reserve & Llangasty church. There’s a beautifully designed timber bird hide in the reserve, looking out over the reeds and the water beyond, so bring your binoculars! In the summer the meadows next to the lake, which we will walk through, are home to many wild flowers attracting dragonflies. The British Wildlife Trust has named Llangorse as the first 'Dragonfly hot-spot' in Wales! After a stop for your picnic lunch, we then head back up hill onto The 'Allt yr Esglair' ridge which gives stunning views all around of the lake & the Black Mountains on one side, and the Usk Valley with Pen-y-Fan mountain in the distance the other way. In our opinion, one of the best views in the National Park! This ridge was formerly an iron-age hill fort, and then later the Romans built a road straight over the top! The terrain is varied and there are obviously hilly bits, but no mountains involved, and things will be taken at a steady pace with plenty of time for absorbing the views and taking photos! Assistance is given over stiles and anywhere where else when needed. Dogs are allowed but will need to be kept on a lead and under control, as there will probably be livestock around, and possibly ground-nesting birds.
